What is a marqab?
A marqab (مَرْقَب) is a tall watchtower. For centuries it rose at the edge of towns and along caravan routes; a lookout would climb it at dawn to read the horizon, spot whoever approached from afar — friend or raider — and warn the people before danger arrived. It was the community's sleepless eye.
Marqab Al-Shanana
One of the most famous towers in Arabia stands in the town of Al-Shanana, adjoining the city of Ar-Rass in Al-Qassim, Saudi Arabia. It is a soaring conical mud-brick tower about 27 metres tall on a round base, raised over two centuries ago (around 1211 AH / late 1700s) for lookout and defence. Its watchmen guarded Ar-Rass and its wells and signalled the alarm at the first sign of a raid. It still stands today — among the tallest earthen structures, a monument to vigilance and grit.
A digital marqab
From that idea, mrqb was born — a watchtower for our age. Instead of one horizon it watches the whole world; instead of a lone sentinel, thousands of sources and the eye of AI. It lifts events onto the map moment by moment and warns you before the news reaches you. The same ancient purpose, with today's tools: to see what's coming — before it comes for you.
